Human medicines are a leading cause of pet poisoning — and cats are especially sensitive. These human medicines are toxic to cats even in doses that seem tiny.

One pill can kill a cat
Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is lethal to cats at very low doses. Never give human painkillers to a cat without explicit veterinary instruction.
Common medicines that poison cats
- Paracetamol / acetaminophen — fatal at tiny doses. UK paracetamol guide
- Ibuprofen and naproxen — kidney and stomach ulcers. Ibuprofen toxicity
- Aspirin — toxic at cat doses; only use if vet-prescribed
- ADHD medications — stimulants cause seizures and heart problems
- Antidepressants — serotonin syndrome risk
- Cold and flu remedies — often contain paracetamol and decongestants
- Iron supplements — overdose causes severe GI and organ damage
How cats access medicines
Dropped pills, open handbags, bedside tables, and blister packs left on counters are common sources. Kittens bat pills like toys. Store all medicines in closed cupboards — never leave them on nightstands.
